Finally back to writing
It’s nice to break out of a routine, but after my nearly two week break, I’m happy to dive back in. I talk about my turtle progress on Love Conquers. If you get a chance, stop by and let me know if you’re a turtle or a hare. Tomorrow I’m blogging at Magical Musings about a book on — gulp — public speaking.
And if you write paranormal or fantasy, check out Marcia Colette’s blog on Shapeshifter Romance, and you can highlight your achievements.
In addition to getting back into the routine of writing, I’m getting back into healthy eating and exercising routines. On Oprah’s show today, her trainer Bob Greene talks about exercise. Tomorrow, Dr. Oz will talk about everything else good we should do for our bodies. If you can’t watch her shows, you can go to her website the next day and watch clips.
This morning for breakfast, I ate a vegetable spring roll. I love spring rolls, and each one is only 100 calories. I get them from a grocery store about 15 minutes away. One other thing I do is buy Ghiradelli’s dark chocolate squares. They’re about 55 calories each, and one of them is enough to fulfill my chocolate longings.
Do you have any delicious and healthy food suggestions for me?

Hey Edie, you introduced me to Ghiradelli’s at conference and it’s been my friend ever since.
Also, I’m going to be losing a few pounds in the next few months. I read up on MUFA’s, and the best ones to eat with your meals to lose weight in target zones. It’s called the Flat Belly Diet, and there’s a four day jumpstart and you drink Sassy Water that has ginger root and other ingredients. My daughter gave me the Magic Bullet for Christmas, so I’m excited to start mixing those smoothies! The only downside is scheduling a trip to the bigger store; the Piggly Wiggly doesn’t have all the ingredients I need to get started. LOL.
Good luck on your weight loss too!

LaD, I’ll be interested to see Dr. Oz says tomorrow. I already eat a lot of healthy fats, like salmon, walnuts, almonds and EVO. I was thinking of drinking V8, but decided to go with a lot of fruits and vegies and a little protein. And, of course, my Ghiradelli squares.
Have fun with your ginger root. It sounds healthy.

I’m with ya on all fronts today, Edie.
Good luck with everything!

Robin, good luck to you too!

Did you get up at the time you wanted this morning?
I think I’m a turtle, most of the time.
January 5th, 2009 at 10:24 am
Me? LOL! I just bought a rice cooker, and I’m astonished it makes perfect rice that I love. I eat brown rice with everything. Now that I have a rice cooker, it’s so much easier to make! Otherwise, I tend to go for what’s quickest.

Amy, I got up at 6am, but I didn’t realize how long it took to get up, put out the dog, fill up the dog and cat bowl, get dressed, etc. Then I couldn’t resist answering a couple emails before writing. But I got my pages done, and that’s what counts.
I see you’re in the JaNo. Write, fellow turtle, write!

Spy, have fun with the rice cooker. Maybe I should try one, but I don’t know where I’d put it. Our shelves are full. I use the quick brown rice. It takes about 10 minutes.

Hmm, healthy food suggestions. I always do/feel best when I keep the protein intake up (I’m big and ’sturdy’ and did some relatively serious weight lifting for a long time, so if I don’t feed the muscles, they spread overnight)
So I tend to make a lot of fish/chicken broths and put the veggie remnants from my juicer in, cook ‘em down and get some interesting soups. Warm food just makes my tummy feel more comfy and full.
Maybe because I’m a hareturtlehare.

I have a delicious food suggestion: Skinny Cows. They’re frozen treats (fat-free ice cream treats) and come in ice-cream sandwiches, fudge-sicles, and my favorite, ice-cream cones (like nutty buddies, only better). Other than those, the rest of my food menu is deliciously evil.
I started back on my work-out routine today, too. Balance ball for abs, hips, thighs and asses. My dog had fun watching!

Lainey, you don’t look sturdy in your pictures. If you have a juicer, you eat healthier than I do. Of course, dark chocolate is a health food.
I was thinking of making soup every night. No meals, just soup. Warm food is excellent! Even for those who are only turtles.

I do have tips! Not that I follow them….but I have them! Eggo waffles are only 70 calories or something like that. Crunchy stuff tends to be more satisfying, like carrots or celery dipped in low fat dressing. Puffed wheat is the cereal with the lowest calories and makes a good snack. The most important thing is calorie counting. If you figure out your calories each day you’ll lose weight. Exercise is great for toning, and it will burn some calories, but not enough. The total amount of calories is the key.
OK. I’m going to go stick my fingers down my throat now. Toodles, Edie!

Edie, everything that tastes good is bad, so i have nothing to offer.
January 5th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
Robin, too funny. Good hints. I don’t know if I’ll follow them either. I think I’d rather eat less than eat something that doesn’t taste good. The 100 calorie spring rolls are yummy. Or soups. I like soups.

Karin, I know! We went to the best Italian restaurant last week. I get hungry just thinking about it.

I try to eat healthy, but I exercise every day and I don’t count my calories. If I want a piece of cheesecake, I’ll have it. I always bake my own cookies and cakes, and I think that makes them healthier. No additives or any nasties.
One of my favorites (and the rest of my family’s) is chicken noodle soup. Chicken breast cut into thin strips and browned with a teaspoon of Thai green curry paste. Then add chicken stock, creamed sweet corn, low fat coconut milk, a grated courgette and 2 minute noodles. Simmer until the chicken is cooked. Yum.

Edie, it sounds like you are definitely into a good groove! What a way to start the new year.
January 6th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
Cindy, I’m not in such a good eating groove today. I’ll do better tonight. But I did write over 1000 words. I’ll write another 1000 words by tonight.

Raw almonds. Crunchy and delicious and the “good fat.” I make avocado sandwiches with sprouts on whole wheat. But as far as sticking to a diet, Jasmine green tea . . . hot, all day long, helps. The scent is soothing . . . it’s energizing, but not jittery. And my acupuncturist swears by it.

Erica, I’m drinking Jasmine green tea right now. And I eat raw almonds! My husband puts them in his salad (which we have almost every day), but I usually eat my share of almonds as I make the salads. Last night we had soup and salad for dinner. I make a delicious soup with vegetable broth, stewed tomatoes, beans, onions, carrots, garlic, etc.
I’ll buy avocado and sprouts the next time I go to the grocery store. We already eat a whole grain, very healthy bread, so we’re good there.

Thanks for the “plug-back” Edie.
As for healthy foods, I don’t have any. However, I have happy ones like chocolate chip cookies and the coldest glass of milk you can come up with. There’s also warm sweet potato pie with a lump of vanilla ice cream on top. And then there’s…
Oh. I guess I should stop now.

Marcia, thanks for making me hungry. You’re evil.
I made pumpkin pie without a crust and had a piece tonight. It’s low fat and low calorie, but not so sure about the whip cream.
